Heat Pump Repair and Installation in Asheville, NC
A heat pump moves heat instead of burning fuel to create it, pulling warmth from outside air into the home in winter and moving heat back outside in summer from the same piece of equipment. Bullman installs and repairs heat pumps for homes across the Asheville area, and because a standard heat pump loses heating capacity as outdoor temperature drops, sizing and backup heat matter more in the mountains west of Asheville than they do in warmer parts of the state. Technicians train specifically on the low temperature performance limits that come with mountain elevation, not just manufacturer specs written for a milder climate.

FAQs
Does a heat pump work in cold Western North Carolina winters?
A heat pump keeps working in cold weather, but its heating capacity and efficiency decline as the outdoor temperature drops, and homes at higher elevations feel that decline on more days than homes near downtown Asheville. Backup heat, either electric strips or a gas furnace, covers the gap once outdoor temperatures fall below the point where the heat pump alone can keep up.
What is the difference between a heat pump and a geothermal system?
A heat pump pulls heat from outdoor air, so its performance changes with the weather, while a geothermal system pulls heat from the ground through a buried loop that stays at a stable temperature year round. Geothermal systems cost more to install but hold their efficiency through extreme cold better than a standard air source heat pump.
Why does my heat pump blow cool air sometimes in winter?
A heat pump periodically runs a defrost cycle to melt ice off the outdoor coil, and during that cycle it can blow cool air into the home for a few minutes at a time. If cool air runs for longer than a normal defrost cycle, a refrigerant leak or a stuck reversing valve is a more likely cause, and that calls for a service visit.
How long does a heat pump typically last?
Most heat pumps last 10 to 15 years, somewhat shorter than a gas furnace because the outdoor unit runs through both heating and cooling seasons rather than sitting idle for half the year. Regular maintenance, including coil cleaning and refrigerant checks, helps a heat pump reach the higher end of that range.
Can a heat pump replace a furnace entirely?
In most homes, yes, as long as backup heat, either electric strips or a paired furnace through a dual fuel setup, is sized to cover the coldest days at that home’s specific elevation. Bullman evaluates whether a standalone heat pump handles peak winter demand before recommending it as a full furnace replacement.

The technician who came was extremely professional, and very knowledgeable. Explained to me everything he did. And the status of my HVAC. A small part needed to be replaced upon inspection. The tech explained fully the function of the part and why it needed to be replaced. Very satisfied.
Asheville Dent
Only good things to say the folks at Bullman Heating & Air. We were sweltering under the summer heat within our shop due to a broken circulation fan and - like the heroes they are - they pulled through with a timely repair. Thanks to them, we are no longer suffering under the oppression of the hot sun. We recommend them for all your heating and air needs, and will be happy to use them again in the future should the need arise. Coolest regards from the Asheville Hail and Dent Repair crew
